Moving equipment safely

During a project it may be necessary to move some equipment such as ladders and other large tools from place to place and it is essential that this is done safely as the devastation that can be caused by losing a load needs to be avoided at all costs.

Most vans have roof racks installed as standard, but it is how the load is secured to the rack that is important. Rachet straps are ideal in this scenario as they can be tightened to ensure the load does not move when on the roof rack however they need to be fixed in such a way that the load cannot move from side to side but also from front to back.

Carrying materials that are longer than the vehicle can be problematic and appropriate warning signs should be attached to the overhanging part. Some drivers think that it is fine to have materials or tools sticking out of the windows of the vehicle, but this is an extremely dangerous practice and can result in prosecution by the police.

If it is necessary to use a trailer when moving tools and materials it is essential that the load limits are adhered to and that the trailer has the correct number plate for the towing vehicle. The connection between the trailer and the vehicle must be secure to avoid the trailer becoming unhitched and causing an accident.
