Working in the construction industry can be a brilliant career choice for a number of reasons.
Firstly, job security is very good as there is always going to be the need for housing, factories and retail outlets. Training to specialise in a particular trade such as plumbing, electrical installation or carpentry will ensure a good supply of work but equally being able to combine some of the trades will be beneficial.
Secondly, rapid career progression can be achieved for those who want it particularly if working for a large company with a high staff turnover. On the job training opportunities should be sought with many companies being willing to pay for workers to undertake further training and qualifications.
Lastly, the opportunity to start up as a self- employed construction contractor is easily achievable after a few years’ experience has been gained. It is a good idea to start by working as a sole trader and then as more contracts are taken on it may be necessary to seek out employees who will either need to be employed or who are willing to subcontract. Employing a work force is a big step to take as tax and national insurance rules will need to be followed but there is plenty of resources out there to make the process achievable.
