If you work in the construction industry whether in an industrial or domestic setting you may be called upon to work at height, so it is essential that you are aware of the regulations relating to this type of work and to ensure that you are following these regulations and guidance in order to minimise any risks to your health and safety and prevent a fall.
The phrase working at height simply means working in a place that without any safety equipment or precautions you could fall and suffer personal injury. This need not necessarily be from a great height and could be due to using an unsafe ladder or because of an insubstantial surface below. Appropriate guidance is available online from the Health and Safety Executive about the correct use of ladders and whether scaffolding with a work platform is required instead for some tasks.
If you are called upon to work at height in your construction role the work should be planned and organised carefully, and the correct equipment provided by the management should always be used for the job. Detailed risk assessments should be carried out by the management before any work commences and any risks minimised as much as possible.
