Do you need additional licenses to drive construction vehicles?

If you work or are looking to start work in the construction industry then you may be required to drive or operate construction vehicles. This may be anything from a Forklift truck to an Excavator. Although there is not additional license that is needed you do need to be competent in driving and operating these vehicles and often need to have completed a training course ran by a recognised provider.

IT is essential that you feel confident and happy to drive any vehicle before getting behind the wheel. IF you are unsure or haven’t driven one for a while then you may need to go on a refresher course or sit in with someone else first if possible. Always ensure that you adhere to all the safety rules and procedures as often many of these vehicles are extremely heavy and powerful so you need to ensure that you are careful at all times. Some employers will pay for you to go on relevant courses to get the qualifications or training you need to drive plant machinery. They may ask you to contribute towards this or they may pay to put you through the course, often asking you to agree to a minimum contract with them.
