Lifting equipment is designed to make lifting processes quicker and safer. However, this relies on the person operating the equipment using it in a safe way. It’s important that anybody who is using a crane, furniture mover, loading skate or another piece of lifting equipment knows exactly what they are doing in order to stay safe.
All members of staff must be fully trained before using lifting equipment. Some, like forklift trucks, will require a special type of license. If not, they should still receive full training and their training should be refreshed on a regular basis. Keep notes of the training that people have received.
Another part of staying safe is to make sure the equipment itself is safe. Check it over before you use it. Things like lifting slings or chain hoists could get damaged easily without you noticing. There should also be formal inspections on a regular basis as well.
