Using a Lanyard for Fall Safety

A lanyard is a piece of equipment that is used by people working at height. It consists of webbing or cable that acts as an anchor, attaching to the D-ring of a safety harness to prevent a person from falling. Lanyards are essential pieces of equipment and they should always be used in the right way to prevent accidents from happening.

There are many different types of lanyard available, including:

  • Shock absorbing
  • Non-shock absorbing
  • Internal shock safety
  • Extension
  • Stretch
  • Tie back
  • Extendable
  • Y-type

The lanyard selected will all depend on what exactly it is being used for. For example, a Y-lanyard is ideal for somebody who needs to move around different obstacles as it can be attached to two points of anchorage at the same time.

Lanyards can be used in many different industries that involve people working at height. This includes the construction, oil, gas, water treatment and mining industries amongst others.
